Uses for Coconut Oil

Apart from its primary culinary purposes, coconut oil lends itself to a variety of uses. This versatile oil is widely utilised in beauty products and pharmaceutical preparations. It would be a mammoth task to list everything, but here are some practical and popular ones:

  • Oil pulling: an Ayurvedic practice of swishing coconut oil in the mouth for about 20 minutes, said to pull out toxins from the mouth, kill bacteria and whiten teeth.
  • Moisturiser, especially during winter, when skin is prone to cracking.
  • Lip balm.
  • Hair conditioner.
  • Face scrub: mix with granulated sugar (caster sugar) or granulated salt. Gently rub into face.
  • Body scrub: same as above, particularly good for dry elbows and heels.
  • Toothpaste: prepare with baking soda and a few drops of lemon / mint essential oil and use for brushing.
  • Hay fever aid: rub around nose / lip area to catch pollen and reduce sneezing.
  • Massage oil / rub: add in a few drops of essential oil and use for massage.
  • Make-up remover for the ladies.
  • Shaving oil for the gents.
  • Beard conditioner for the hipsters.
  • Pet grooming: use on fur of dogs to condition.
